Seibu Railway not interested in ‘anti-chikan’ cameras
In an attempt to combat ”chikan”, groping and molesting which frequently occurs on crowded trains in Japan, it was suggested on Seibu Railway’s holding company Seibu Holdings general stockholders’ meeting that cameras be put inside all Seibu Railway’s train cars. The proposal was put forward jointly by 30 shareholders, but the board of directors dismissed the proposal, saying it would be too costly, the Asahi Shimbun reported Friday morning.
The proposal, originally launched by Seibu Railway employee Sanzon Yamaguchi, suggested that all railroad cars, except for the women-only ones would be fitted with cameras. The case where a high school girl accused a Seibu railways employee of groping her, who is denying the accusations as well as a recent movie about the faiths of men falsely accused of chikan were said to have been the stimuli for the proposal.
