Meat-mislabeler Meat Hope files for bankruptcy

The scandal-ridden Hokkaido meat processing company Meat Hope, which stirred Japan with a meat mislabeling scandal in June, filed for bankruptcy Tuesday at the Tomakomi branch of the Sapporo District court, as was expected since the company disclosed it was facing bankruptcy to its union members, earlier in July.

According to credit company Teikoku Databank, the company is indebted for over 600 million yen (US$4,920,000).

The company, founded in 1976, was found in June 2007 to have mixed pork into their ground beef, and mislabeling the country of origin for other products.
