‘Cool Biz’ cut CO2 by 1.4 mil. tons this summer, gov’t claims
The Environment Ministry announced on Monday that the government-led “Cool Biz” no-tie, no-jacket campaign this summer helped companies in Japan reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.4 million tons, which is equivalent to the amount emitted from 3 million households in a month, Kyodo News reports.
The announcement is based on a calculation assuming that 48.1 percent of companies set the temperature for air conditioning at their offices at 28 C between June and September in line with the campaign aimed at combating global warming.
Some analysts have however questioned the effect of the campaign, as only company offices were subject to the survey and not individuals, who very well may have set the temperatures in their homes lower than what the government designated, as Japan was hit by an record-beating heat wave this summer.
The internet survey the calculation is based on was handed out to 1,200 private company workers and public servants, of whom only 576 responded.
