Ozawa says will resign if opposition loses election

Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) party leader Ichiro Ozawa announced Sunday that he will retire from politics completely if the opposition fails to win a majority in the upcoming July 29 upper house election, Kyodo News reported. Ozawa had hinted earlier this week that he would resign from his post as party leader in the case the opposition loses out in the election, but now increased his stake.

“I don’t think I need to stay in politics [if the opposition doesn’t gain a majority],” the Kyodo report quoted Ozawa saying during a Fuji TV show, broadcasted Sunday.

In the latest Asahi poll, published last Sunday, the DPJ were leading over the Liberal Democratic Party with 25% against 19%.
