Gov’t won’t demand U.S. apology over WWII atomic bombings

The Japanese government said on Tuesday in a reply to an interpellation written by diet member Kiyomi Tsujimoto (SDP) that they have no intention of demanding a U.S. apology over the World War II atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, after discussing the matter at a Cabinet meeting, the Asahi Shimbun reports.

“Rather than demanding an apology over something that happened over 60 years ago, we find it more important to help and create a world free of nuclear weapons,” the government said, but also reiterated its stance on the atomic bombings: “We do recognize that the atomic bombings created an extreme humanitarian crisis in a very large area.“
