Farm Minister Akagi feels ill, extends stay in Beijing
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced Thursday that Farm Minister Norihiko Akagi, currently in Beijing on an official mission, is feeling ill and will not be able to return to Japan on the same day as previously planned, the Asahi Shimbun reports.
The ministry said Akagi had started to feel ill after having lunch, having diarrhea and experiencing dizziness, and decided to stay in Beijing for at least one more night.
The Farm Minister has dealt one of several serious blows to the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s Upper House election campaign through allegations that he filed multi-million yen expenditures for an office not in use.
Akagi’s prolonged stay in Beijing could be an attempt to move focus away from the beleaguered minister, when only three days remain until the election.
