Farm Minister Akagi refuses to step down despite LDP election fiasco

Embattled Farm Minister Norihiko Akagi, embroiled in several political funding scandals, said Tuesday he will not resign from his post, despite the Liberal Democratic Party were utterly trounced by the opposition in Sunday’s Upper House election.

“I will tackle a mountain of agricultural issues,” Akagi said at a press conference, according to a Kyodo News report.

While surveys have indicated that the lost pension records scandal played the largest role in the LDP’s lost support, Akagi’s unused office expenditure scandals which were brought to light just weeks before the election did little to improve the LDP’s tarnished reputation, and hampered their campaigning efforts.
