‘Move the war criminals from Yasukuni,’ relatives of war dead demand
“The Yasukuni Shrine should be an establishment all Japanese, including His Majesty the Emperor, can visit to to worship the spirits of the war dead.” At a meeting for an association for relatives of war dead held in Tsu, Mie Prefecture Saturday, the group’s chairman demanded the Class-A war criminals enshrined at Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine be moved to a separate place of worship, the Sankei Shimbun reports.
The group, Nippon Izokukai, also showed discontent with newly appointed Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda. “Does he think he has done enough only because he announced he will not visit the shrine?” the group’s chairman, Makoto Koga asked rhetorically during his speech held at the event.
Former Prime Minister Ichijiro Koizumi sparked massive protests in China and South Korea by making annual visits to the controversial shrine, where 12 World War II Class-A war criminals are enshrined. Yasuo Fukuda, recently appointed Prime Minister after previous Prime Minister Shinzo Abe resigned on health concerns, was early to announce he had no intention of making any visits to the shrine.
