Gov’t task force requests an extra ¥2.4 trillion to fight declining birthrate
A government task force adopted as expected a report Tuesday that calls for up to 2.44 trillion yen in added outlays to fund measures to counter Japan’s declining birthrate, according to a Kyodo News report.
The report says there is a need for effective public funding to support parents who want to raise children while working. The report also calls for an extensive overhaul of official services, ranging from general health care, maternal and child health care, child welfare and employment insurance.
The report also warns that if the birthrate declines further, there will be a rapid decrease in Japan’s working population which will have a “great impact on the country’s economy.“
The report was adopted at a meeting of the task force at the Kantei, chaired by Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura.
