Gap widens between LDP and DPJ, Komeito gains
The gap in support between ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and oppositional Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) has widened further, it was revealed in an Asahi Shimbun opinion survey presented Sunday, with only days to go until the July 29 Upper House election.
When asked the question, “If you would vote today, which party would you vote for,” 32% said DPJ, up 2 points from last week’s poll. Only 20% said they would vote for LDP, down 3 points from last week, but still one point higher than their bottom record of 19%, from three weeks ago.
Approval rate of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Cabinet remained at a low 30%. Disapproval rate rose 1 point to 56%. Approval rate for his party, on the other hand, sank by 5 points from last week’s 28% to a miserable 23%. DPJ’s approval rate is not much brighter - although they gained one point from last week, they are still one point below the LDP at 22%, but the party has at least strengthened it’s approval rate among women - a group where DPJ support is traditionally low - up to 22%, beating LDP’s 19% in the same group.
Support for the ruling coalition’s junior partner, New Komeito, rocketed 2 points up from last week’s notation, up to 7%. The Japan Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party kept their ranks from last week, at 4% and 3% , respectively.
