50-year-old woman bitten by ‘Koro-chan the Seal’

A woman called the police emergency line from Otsu harbor, Toyoroko, Hokkaido around 2 PM, Saturday, saying she had been bitten by a seal, Asahi Shimbun reports.

Police said a 60-year-old woman had received light injuries on the inside of her thigh. The area where the accident occurred has since 4 years back been inhabited by a wild harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) upon which the local populace has lovingly bestowed the name “Koro-chan”.

Since Koro-chan started appearing, Otsu harbor has seen an increasing amount of tourists coming to see it, and only a week ago, on June 30, another woman reported she had been bitten by the little critter.

Local police have responded by warning people not to touch the seal.
