Peru’s Fujimori extradition request rejected by Chilean judge
In a surprising move, a Chilean judge rejected a request to extradite former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori to Peru where he would face corruption and human rigths charges on Wednesday, AFP reports. Fujimori is currently under house arrest in Santiago.
Judge Orlando Alvarex rejected all the charges given as grounds for an extradition, going against the recemmondations of Chile’s Attorney General Monica Maldonado, who had endorsed 10 out of 12 of the charges and urged Chile to extradite Fujimori.
“I cannot deny that this news fills us with joy, but we Fujimori supporters are going to remain prudent and cautios”, Fujimori’s Lima representative Carlos Raffo told local media. Peru did however not wait long to announce their plans for an appeal.
Fujimori announced on June 28 his intention to run for the People’s New Party in the Japanese upper house election, in a move widely regarded as an attempt to escape extradition to Peru. It is yet unclear how Wednesday’s ruling will affect Fujimori’s candidacy.
