Japan urges self-restraint to contain riots in Tibet
Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura called on Saturday on both the Chinese government and demonstrators to exercise self-restraint following the recent clashes in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa, Kyodo News reports.
“Basically, it is a domestic issue for China but we hope that both sides will exercise self-restraint so that the disturbance will not spread,” Machimura said at a press conference in Tokyo.
Kazuo Kodama, press secretary of the Foreign Ministry, echoed the Chief Cabinet Secretary’s sentiment in a statement issued the same day.
“Our country calls on those concerned to respond calmly and strongly hopes that the situation will be resolved at an early date and in a peaceful manner,” he was quoted as saying by Kyodo News.
