Japanese tourist held captive in Iran apologizes for ‘causing trouble’
A 23-year-old Japanese tourist who was freed Saturday after being held captive since October by bandits in southeastern Iran apologized Monday for having caused trouble to the governments of Japan and Iran, Kyodo News reports.
“I am very sorry that I caused a great deal of trouble to the Iranian government, the Japanese government and all others,” Satoshi Nakamura, a student at Yokohama National University, was quoted as saying at a press conference in Tehran.
Nakamura appeared at the press conference together with his father, who had arrived the same day in Tehran. Japanese newspapers report that Nakamura appeared in good health, showing no visible scars of his nearly 8 month long captivity. He also pointed out that his captivators had not treated him violently.
Nakamura was abducted by bandits when he was traveling alone near the Iranian city of Bam on Oct. 7. The bandits are believed to have been members of a drug smugglig group known as the Shahbakhsh. The group had reportedly demanded the release of one of its incarcerated members as a condition for releasing Nakamura.
The bandits were forced to flee to Pakistan and had no choice but to leave Nakamura behind after Iran had successfully captured one of the group’s leaders, the Asahi Shimbun quoted Iran’s Minister of Intelligence Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehei as saying.
