Patient died after dentist-in-training performed anesthesia
A patient died in October 2006 after a dentist-in-training gave him anesthesia at Mitsui Memorial Hospital in Chiyoda, Tokyo, it was learnt from a Tokyo Metropolitan Government investigation, the Asahi Shimbun reported Wednesday.
According to the investigation, a 72-year-old man with a liver disease died within minutes of cardiac arrest after a dentist-in-training had performed a general anesthesia on the man, in October last year. At the time of the procedure, there had not been supervisor present.
The same dentist-in-training performed another anesthesia at the same hospital the following month on a 73-year-old woman, who two days later suffered a cardiac arrest, too. The patient has since then been in a persistent vegetative state. The hospital said that there was a high probability that the instructor had not been present at this occasion either.
Mitsui Memorial Hospital has since 2003 taken in Nihon University School of Dentistry students once a week, and practiced anesthetizing. Their supervisor was a Nihon University dentistry teacher, part-time employed by the hospital.
The Metropolitan Government said they will further their investigation into the case.
