Man hurls Molotov cocktail at Defense Ministry

A man hurled a Molotov cocktail at the Defense Ministry in Shinjuku, Tokyo around midnight Tuesday, but was overpowered by police and arrested at the spot, the police announced early Wednesday.

5 minutes past midnight, a 21-year-old man wearing a black suit forced his way through the main gates of the Defense Ministry and hurled a Molotov cocktail towards one of the ministry’s buidlings, which flared up a couple of meters further inside, while shouting something, the Asahi Shimbun reported.

The man was on Wednesday identified as Yujiro Makita, a member of a nationalistic right-wing group and employed at a Nikkei Shimbun retail outlet. Police said they found on the suspect one more Molotoc cocktail, an edged weapon and a written statement, containing criticism of former Defense Minister Fumio Kyuma’s comment that the WWII atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagaski had been inevitable, among other things.

The Nikkei Shimbun released an official apology, expressing regret that one of their employees has been arrested.

There were no reports of injuries, and the ministry stated no damage had been done to its buildings.

The police are currently investigating the suspect’s motive and background.
