Tokyo McDonald’s outlets faked salad fabrication dates
McDonald’s Japan announced Tuesday that salads with falsified production dates had been sold at four of the chain’s outlets in Tokyo, according to a Kyodo News report.
The misconduct was brought to light when staff employed by a franchise that is running the four outlets in question admitted they had instructed subordinates to stick newer labels on unsold products so they could be sold the following day. McDonald’s in-house rules stipulate that salads must be sold within 12 hours of preparation, or be discarded.
Staffers at the four outlets, in Waseda in Shinjuku Ward, Shin-Otsuka and Hongo in Bunkyo Ward, and Minami-Otsuka in Toshima Ward, also admitted they had used milk shake ingredients, tomatoes, yoghurt and eggs after their expiry date, according to the company.
“Our in-house probe conducted in early November revealed that false labels might have been used, but we did not make this public in the belief that we had not violated the Food Sanitation Law or any other regulations,” Kyodo news quoted a McDonald’s public relations officer saying.
McDonald’s also announced it intends to terminate the contract with the franchisee and run the four outlets itself.
