Cardboard meat buns revealed in Akihabara
The so-called “local cuisine” of Akibahara, the nerdiest neighborhood in Tokyo, differs wildly from most other cuisines in Japan. Previously associated with the canned oden, company Shuman Shuman are now introducing a product they hope will become a hit in the hood - cardboard steamed meat buns.
In July, a Chinese CCTV report allegedly showed that a meat buns producer in Beijing used cardboard soaked in toxic chemicals to bring down the production costs. Although later reports said the the initial report had been staged by television reporters looking for a breaking story, the incident was widely reported in Japan.
The cardboard buns on sale in Akihabara will however not actually contain cardboard, but instead comes served in a cardboard box. The company behind it says the buns, known as nikuman in Japanese, are “of the highest quality.“
To keep in line with the Chinese theme, staffers at the Akihabara shop are wearing uniforms somewhat resembling those of the Chinese army - only that in Akihabara, the uniforms come in pink.
The meat buns can be found at a shop called “Maririn” which is within 30 seconds walking distance from the Suehiro station on the Tokyo underground Ginza line.

Quelle: Japan News Review […]
