Typhoon No. 4 leaves 99,400 Okinawa households without power, now heads for Kyushu
Typhoon No. 4 (International name: Man-yi) hit Okinawa’s main island and part of the Amami islands chain on Friday morning, bringing heavy rain and cutting off power supplies over large areas, Ryukyu Shimbun, Kyodo News, etc. reported.
8 people have so far been reported injured and the power supply for some 99,400 households was cut off in Okinawa Prefecture, the Ryukyu Shimbun reported. The highest wind speed measured in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture’s residential capital, was as high as 56.3 m/s.
All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines have canceled a total of 134 flights today to and from Okinawa, affecting about 25,550 people.
The typhoon is predicted to reach Kyushu on Sunday, moving there at a speed of 25 km/h, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. It is expected to bring heavy rain and gale over wide areas of western Japan, but the typhoon has already brought heavy rain to some parts of southern Kyushu. Miyazaki Prefecture’s residential capital Saito saw up to 85 millimeters of rain per hour over a one hour period up to 2 a.m., the Mainichi Shimbun quoted the Japan Meteorological Agency.
