China Airlines offers 230-290,000 yen in compensation to Naha passengers
A China Airlines spokesman revealed today the company would pay between 230 and 290 thousand yen to each passenger who was onboard the China Airlines plane that exploded after landing at Naha Airport, as compensation for destroyed luggage, etc.
Customers travelling in business class will receive 80,000 Taiwan dollars (ca 290,000 yen) and Economy class travellers will receive 65,000 Taiwan dollars (ca 230,000 yen). The money will be a compensation for luggage that was destroyed in the explosion as well as for “causing all kinds of problems” for the customers, according to the company.
According to international treaties, the compensation for 1 kg of lost luggage should be at least 20 U.S. dollars (2,300 yen), while Taiwanese law calls for the airlines to pay 1000 Taiwan dollars (3,500 yen) per kg, but not more than 20,000 Taiwan dollars (70,000 yen) in total for one piece of luggage. China Airlines’ decision to pay a much larger sum is likely an attempt to show the sincerity of their apologies.
