3000 traffic deaths come late this year

The number of traffic deaths this year rose above 3000 on Tuesday, when 16 people died in traffic accidents the same day, according to statistics put together by the National Police Agency, the Asahi Shimbun reports.

This top was reached 19 days later than last year, and is the slowest pace measured during the last 70 years since the NPA began collecting these statistics.

Most prone to traffic accidents leading to death were Osaka Prefecture (144 deaths), Tokyo Prefecture (143 deaths) and Aichi Prefecture (140). Least prone were Tottori Prefecture (18 deaths) and Shimane Prefecture (21), both in the Chugoku region.
