Last weekend of summer vacation, fierce heat and 5-year-old in drowning accident

On Sunday, the last weekend day before the summer vacation ends up, Tokyo’s Nerima Ward amusement park “Toshimaen” saw its pools visited by some 20,000 people, setting a new record, while in Ibaraki Prefecture, a 5-year-old died while swimming in the Kinugawa river, the latest in a string  of water-related accidents, the Asahi Shimbun reports.

This summer’s record-breaking heat stayed above 30 degrees in most places - the hottest measured in Tokyo was 33,6 degrees (Otemachi), the hottest in the country in Aisai, Aichi Prefecture, where the mercury reached 36.7.
