50% of youth have experienced mental or physical abuse in relationships, gov’t survey shows

Half of young Japanese, male and female alike, say they have experienced physical violence or mental abuse at the hands of their sweethearts, according to a government survey presented Friday, the Mainichi Shimbun reports.

The online-conducted survey, targeting young people in their 10’s and 20’s, was carried out by the government because of violence in unmarried couples are not covered by the current anti-domestic violence laws.

42.7% of those who stated they had experienced either physical or mental abuse said they had not told anybody about what had happened.

The survey was carried out on a total of 358 unmarried persons in their 10’s and 20’s, of which 192 were men and 166 women. 258 of the respondents replied they had, or had had, at least one girlfriend or boyfriend.
